The repetitiveness of running on a treadmill and lifting weights can get dull, which in turn negatively impacts your desire to go to the gym. If you just can’t force yourself to do another half hour on the elliptical machine again, try these fun alternatives that are enjoyable but still get your heart pumping and your muscles moving. These forms of enjoyable exercise can be adapted for any fitness level.

Hula Hooping

You can find a cheap plastic hula hoop at your local toy store or online. If you find you really enjoy it, you can invest in a more expensive exercise hula hoop. These new generation hula hoops are heavier, which adds to the intensity of the workout. You can even try making your own customized hoop at home that fits your personal specifications and needs.

Dancing

Dancing is not only great exercise, but there are many different forms of dancing. Whether you like the slow elegance of ballet or the upbeat liquidity of hip hop, there’s such to be some form of dance to fit your personal preference. There are also dance cardio hybrid exercises specifically created to get you in shape, like Zumba or Jazzercise. If there are no dance classes offered in your area, or if you prefer working out at home, there are so many instructional videos online that you can learn how to dance samba and salsa right in your living room.

Roller Skating

Roller skating or roller blading, in addition to be fun modes of transportation, are great cardio workouts. They also engage your core muscles are you must use them in order to keep your balance. If you don’t have your own pair of skates, you can rent some at your local rink. Skating rinks are also (usually) family-friendly places that you can take your kids to and wear them out by a family skate day.

Play

If you have a dog, play with them! Fetch, Frisbee, and tug of war will get not only your heart racing but theirs, too. If you don’t have a pet, then play with your kids. A brisk game of tag or capture the flag can help you bond with your children and give you all a good dose of cardio. Even if you don’t have kids or pets, you can call up a group of friends for an old fashioned snowball fight or adult hide and seek. Playing outdoors can make you feel young again, which is the best side effect of exercise.
